That's in the Bible?

Pride Goeth Before a Fall
"Pride goeth before destruction,
and a
HAUGHTY SPIRIT before a fall."
Proverbs 16:18

Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child
(But is that what it really says?)

"He that spareth his rod
HATETH HIS SON:
BUT HE THAT LOVETH HIM chasteneth him betimes."
Proverbs 13:24

Money Is the Root of All Evil

"The LOVE of money is the root of all evils: which while some
coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced
themselves through with many sorrows."
1 Timothy 6:10

The Lord Giveth And The Lord Taketh Away
(A play on words not found in any biblical text.)

It was Job who said, "Naked came I out of my mother's womb,
and naked shall I return thither: The Lord gave, and the Lord
hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD."
Job 1:21

The Writing's on the Wall
(So just where did we get our most popular phrase?)

In  Daniel 5:1-31  the 6th century B.C. King Belshazzar of Babylon
threw a great feast. During the festivities, "fingers of a man's
hand" appeared and wrote a warning on the wall. Daniel was
brought in to translate the words that spelt doom for the
King. Sure enough, the King was assassinated that very
night, hence, the writing was on the wall.

How Many Wise Men?

The New Testament does not mention the names or the number
of the Wise Men who followed the Star of Bethleham.  The only
mention of them is in  Matthew 2:1  where it says, "there came
wise men."   We have always assumed there were three wise
men because  Matthew 2:11  says they brought gifts of gold,
frankincense and myrrh, but further study on the
subject has revealed otherwise.

Why The Fish Symbol?

We automatically think it is because in  Matthew 4:19  Jesus said,
"Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."  But actually
it is because the fish was used as both a secret code, and
as anti-Roman symbols by those who were persecuted
in the early days of Christianity.

Each of the letters in the "Greek word for fish, ichthus" are the
same as those in the phrase; Iesous Christos Theou Huios Soter
which means,
Jesus Christ, of God, the Son, Saviour.

There's Nothing New Under The Sun
(Mentioned a mere 25 times in the short book of Ecclesiastes.)

"...and there is no new thing under the sun."
Ecclesiastes 1:9

The Truth Will Set You Free

"And ye shall know the truth,
and the truth shall
MAKE you free."
John 8:32

You Reap What You Sow
(Or What Comes Around Goes Around.)

Be not deceived; "God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth,
that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of
the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit
shall  of the Spirit reap life everlasting."
Galatians 6:7-8

You're The Apple of My Eye

"He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling
wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him,
he kept him as the apple of his eye."

Although this was the origin of this popular phrase, it has since
been known that "apple" was a mistranslation of long ago, of
the word "core." Jacob was to be kept in the core, or center
of God's eye. This accurately describes his place of honor.
Deuteronomy 32:10

Out of the Mouth of Babes

"Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained
strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest
still the enemy and the avenger."
Psalms 8:2

Escaped By the Skin of My Teeth

"My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh,
and I am escaped
WITH the skin of my teeth."
Job 19:20

Turn the Other Cheek

"But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall
smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also."
Matthew 5:39

"And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek
offer also the other; and him that taketh away
thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also."
Luke 6:29

The words, "turn the other cheek" actually came from
a poem called "Non Resistance" by Holmes who wrote:

Wisdom has taught us to be calm and meek,
To take one blow and turn the other cheek.
It is not written what a man shall do
If the rude caitiff smite the other two!

Stay on the Straight and Narrow Path?

"Enter ye in at the strait gate:
For wide is the gate, and broad
is the way that leadeth to destruction,
and many there be which go in thereat;
Because
STRAIT IS THE GATE,
and narrow is the way, which leadeth
unto life, and few there be that find it."
Matthew 7:13-14

Don't Put Words in My Mouth

King David's nephew Joab, commander in chief of Israel's army, was
the first to do it.  Hoping to bring David and his wayward son,
Absalom, together again, he sends an unnamed woman to see David
with an apology from his son.  "...So Joab put the words in her mouth."
2 Samuel 14:3

Where We Got the Term "Scapegoat"

In the passages below, although one goat dies and the other lives,
the one that lives is the less fortunate, as it is the one that carries
the sins of the people. Even though the people sinned, it is the
scapegoat who gets the punishment.

"And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the LORD
at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And Aaron shall
cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other
lot for the scapegoat. And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which
the LORD's lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering. But the goat,
on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented
alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and
to let him go for a scapegoat  into the wilderness."
Leviticus 16:7-10

A Thorn in My Side

"But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants (the Canaanites) of the
land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which
ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns
in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell."
Numbers 33:55

Like a Lamb to the Slaughter

"He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his
mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep
before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth."
Isaiah 53:6-7

Old Wine in New Bottles?

"Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles
break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but
they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved."
Matthew 9:17

The Blind Leading the Blind

"Let them (the Pharisees) alone: they be blind leaders of the blind.
And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch."
Matthew 15:14

A Fly in the Ointment
(Rephrasing over the years is a lot less graphic.)

"Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send
forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that
is in reputation for wisdom and honour."
Ecclesiastes 10:1

Let Not Thy Left Hand Know
What Thy Right Hand Doeth

what was intended in this passage.)

"But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand
know what thy right hand doeth;"
Matthew 6:3

A Little Bird Told Me

Curse not the king, no not in thy thought;
and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber:
for a bird of the air shall carry the voice,
and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
Ecclesiastes 10:20

Can't Tell Left From Right

And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more
than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between
their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
Jonah 4:11

Maybe you've heard of someone being
"Older Than The Hills."

Art thou the first man that was born?
or wast thou made before the hills?
Job 15:7

"Woe is me!"

Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone;
because I am a man of unclean lips, and
I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips:
for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.
